How are we fighting? In our own strength or in the strength of our God?

‘For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh’.

Our battle is not against flesh and blood….

‘For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.’

If you are a child of God dear friend, all day, every day you are engaged in a spiritual war against a powerful unseen enemy, a cunning, lying foe whose only desire is to make you trip and fall and dishonor your God and keep you from that close communion with Him.

So how are we fighting this battle?

Are we fighting the temptations the devil puts in our path and the lies he whispers into our hearts in our own strength or are we looking to the Lord to help us?

‘the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds’. 2 Cor 10:4

What precious truth friends!

We don’t need to be fighting this daily battle alone, we have weapons that are MIGHTY through God, powerful weapons that can destroy the strongholds in our hearts.

These heavenly weapons can demolish those things that have set themselves up against our Saviour. Those seemingly harmless, little things, yet that have the power in our lives to steal us from spending time with the Lord, that set themselves up against Him, that fill our thoughts with everything but Jesus!

One of my dearest friends and precious sister in Christ was telling me this week that she explained it to her little boy when he wanted some extra screen time like this…

If your heart is this big and you fill nearly all of it with the things you watch and the world, there’s only a tiny space left for Jesus but if you fill your heart with Jesus then there will only be a tiny space left for other things!

WOW!

These are things we know in our heads but put simply for a child that has so much impact!

This battle inside YOU is a battle for your heart and affections.

WHAT WILL WE FILL OUR HEARTS WITH TODAY FRIENDS?

In our own strength we CANNOT win but through Christ, we CAN!

So, looking again at 2 Cor 10:4 and those weapons, what does the Greek word ‘ochyroma’ translated as stronghold also mean?

*1. ‘A castle or fortress, anything on which one relies’

What or who are we relying on? (see yesterday’s post about the little foxes for mine).

*2. ‘the arguments and reasonings by which a disputant endeavors to fortify his opinion and defend it against his opponent.’

How often do we have those arguments in our head, making excuses, or telling ourselves, well there’s nothing really wrong with that, or I need that to help me relax, etc, when really it is drawing our hearts and affections away from God.

and then verse 5…

‘Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ’.

What are these imaginations? What else does that Greek word for imaginations, ‘logismos’ mean?

‘A reckoning, as reasoning such as is hostile to the Christian faith, a judgement, a decision such as conscience raises.’

We are to cast down the arguments the against God and all that’s true and right that the devil whispers in our hearts.

We are to cast down anything that sets itself up against God, anything that we may have elevated above our God, anything we are putting before Him …. Especially ourselves!

Our will, our stubborn independence, our pride, it all has be pulled down that Christ may be our all and in all.

It is a hard battle friends but we are NOT alone.

Keep leaning on the Lord friends, for that strength and be fighting on your knees. Use your sword, the Word of God against the devil and self and all that would take the place of God in our hearts and lives and affections.
