Is your engine running well? Does your car have fuel and oil? Have you topped it up lately?
Just as your car needs fuel to move forward, so do we to move forward in our Christian pathway.
Our verse card today says that faith comes by hearing.
‘So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.’
That hearing of the word of God is the fuel our soul needs to walk in God’s way.
Have you filled up lately?
If we want more faith friends, we need to be hearing and to hear we need to be turning off the noise of the world and making the time to listen.
Fuel has to be got out of from deep under the ground and in the same way the treasures of God’s word are hidden, are we earnestly asking God to help us find them as the psalmist did?…
‘Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.’
Do we dig deep each day searching for that fuel for our souls?
Do we seek to KNOW…’the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ; In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.’
Do we seek for understanding as for…’silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;.
Maybe you’re thinking yes, I went to the services this week and I read my bible. Then my dear friend, have you started the engine?
Knowing God’s word in your head is like a car with no driver, it needs someone in it to turn the key to bring it to life.
Maybe you have stalled in your walk and your heart feels almost dead, or maybe you have never really known true life?
Then seek earnestly for God to turn the key of your heart. To fan the flame that is only flickering in your heart into vibrant life again that you might once more burn bright for Him. Or to give you true life for the first time.
Don’t give up friend, until like the man in the parable you find that hidden treasure and do not rest until it is yours.
Then there are those times when we do fill up on God’s word, when He speaks to us but what do we do then? Do we walk it out or do we sit idle? If a car is just left idling the fuel will be wasted.
‘But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.’
Are we asking God to motivate us, to give us the desire to walk in His ways? Are we asking God to teach us of his ways, that we may walk in his paths and that He would guide us and give us the grace to follow Him and do His will?
Because friends, once the engine is started we cannot let it go down the road alone, it needs someone to stay in it, to steer it in the right direction, to keep it on the road or it would soon veer off and crash.
So, how greatly we each need God to be working in us. Just hearing or reading the word is not enough to steer us in the right direction, we need to be attentive to what God says, to be given a willing heart and then given the grace to walk it out.
We need Him to be always working in us, guiding us, steering us along the right path, keeping us to His way and helping us to walk out the things He has taught us so that we don’t veer off, end up stuck in a ditch or crashing!
May our prayer be this…’cause me to know the way wherein I should walk.’ that we might each be doers of the word and not just hearers only and that our lives may glorify God as we are helped to truly follow Him.
Just as that man when he had found that treasure in the field, sold all that he had, and bought that field containing the treasure, may we too be willing to part with anything but Christ and be willing to give our all, for His glory.
One last though friends, when we follow someone, we TRUST them to guide us right and we follow, even when it doesn’t make sense and we don’t know where we are going.
Following = total dependence.
Total dependence = true joy.
‘And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ.’
Psalm 119:18, Prov 2:4, Matt 13:44-45, James 1:22, Col 2:2-3 Psalm 143:8, 2 Thess 3:5
