‘These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world..
These things… What things had Jesus spoken and to who.
Jesus had eaten supper with his disciples and washed their feet, Judas, that would soon betray Him had gone out and Jesus spent some time encouraging the remaining, true disciples, explaining that He would be leaving them but would still be with them. (John 13-16.)
Jesus told them that…
‘In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.’
He said that..
‘If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.’
He promised to send them the Comforter, the Holy Spirit who would live in them…
‘I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you…At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.’..Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
Jesus also spent some time telling the disciples to abide in Him…
‘I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
‘And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.’
It was these things and many more beautiful truths that Jesus encouraged His disciples with.
Friends, if we truly know Jesus as our Saviour then these truths apply to us too…
He has gone to prepare a place for us.
When we pray rightly, in Jesus name, we will be answered.
We have the Comforter, the Holy Spirit in us, to help and teach us.
We don’t need to be afraid because we have peace through Christ.
We are to bear fruit and to do this we need to abide.
Each child of God is abiding in Christ positionally but we also need grace to walk this abiding out, clinging to Jesus as our only hope and doing all things through Him, not in our own strength and wisdom. Drawing all we need to live for the glory of God from Christ, who is in us to help us.
The joy that comes from Christ in us, no-one can take away from us. People or circumstances may steal our happiness but they CANNOT take away the joy that we have in Christ.
These and many others, are the things that Jesus has spoken to us, so that we too might have that perfect peace.
Yes, there will be troubles and many of them, because…
‘we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God.’
‘BUT be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.’
What precious truth, Jesus has crushed the head of Satan so that he has no power over you as you stand against him in Christ because when Jesus took His last breath upon the cross the victory was won on our behalf.
The tribulations are hard, some of them so very hard to walk through, some of you are walking through those deep waters today, ‘BUT be of good cheer; I have overcome the world..’
Maybe you read that and think, well it’s easy for you to say that, you’re not in my shoes right now, you don’t have my troubles! True, and l know where you’re coming from sweet Friend, but these aren’t my words, it’s Jesus that said it.
Jesus said this knowing that Judas was about to betray Him, knowing the agony He would have to bear in the garden, He said this just before He bore all the wrath of His own Father for each and every sin of each and every one of His people upon the cross! He went through it for each and every one of US that belong to Him…
He. Really. Does. Understand!!…
‘These things I have spoken unto you, that IN ME ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.’
That’s the secret friends, ‘In me!’ will you not rest in, Him?
The Greek word translated peace also means quietness and rest.
Friend, won’t you ask God to help you to rest in His love and fill you with His peace and quietness even in the storm?
Friend, don’t hold onto your troubles, instead let those tribulations, your burdens, your anguish send you running to Christ….
He WILL help you to bear your hard things if you’ll just seek for faith to trust Him in it.
John 16:33, 14:2,18,20,27, 15:5, John 16:22, Acts 14:22.
